Vane Recycled Marble & Concrete
Public Art Sculpture for Chicago Sculpture Exhibit 2023
Public Art Installation
After receiving a 2021 Illinois Arts Council grant for my Modern Athena sculpture, I was able to convert my stone carving studio into a zero waste environment that recycles all carving rubble into casting material. This is my first attempt at a large scale sculpture using recycled marble and concrete for a public art sculpture in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago, IL USA. The large scale feather shape of Vane references both vanity and weather vanes. Our vanity often desires to point in the right direction, but more often than not, is simply a feather twisting in the wind.
7.5h x 5.5w x 2.5d feet recycled marble aggregate, steel and concrete
by Jyl Bonaguro with the support of Shencheng Xu for steel welding, Quinn Auerbach for concrete application, Mike Vasquez for transport, and Terry Karpowicz and Ted Sitting Crow Garner for installation. Special thanks to CSE Chicago Sculpture Exhibit and to the Wicker Park Bucktown Chamber of Commerce for the opportunity.
