Wood Sculpture Installation Transmigration
Mautene Court in Wicker Park 2024-25
Public Art Installation
Transmigration means to pass from one place to another. At its heart, the Transmigration sculpture is a small gathering place where anyone can connect in the midst of the larger whole in positive ways by simply taking a seat or performing within the stage area. I was inspired by the myth of the Phoenix, a bird that made a nest of cypress branches and then set itself on fire. After three days, the phoenix emerged from its own ashes – reborn and released from the sentence of death, able to live on forever. The sculpture thus serves as a symbol of hope and renewal. The form of Transmigration is loosely based upon bird plumage, not only of wings in flight but on fire. The sculpture was first created for Burning Man 2018, then rebuilt with a grant by Lakes of Fire Festival 2022 in Rothbury, Michigan and then painted and exhibited for ArtPrize 2022 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I was excited to finally display it in its hometown of Chicago in the Arts Area for Wicker Park Fest 2023 and for a year long install for 2024-25 at Mautene Court in Wicker Park.
