The Acanthus Leaves Gate Commission was for a private collector. In Ancient Greek architecture the acanthus ornament appears extensively in the capitals of the Corinthian and Composite orders. The acanthus leaf comes from the perennial acanthus plant. Since ancient times, it’s also been said to have healing and medicinal properties. The leaves symbolize enduring life or long life and immortality, thus an apt symbol for home and family.
